5:50 pm - Fables 11 - 17

fa3ryg1rl
So, I got booted for most of the Fables chat last time.
A few thoughts on what we read:

I reallly didn't like Prince Charming at first, but he's definitely grown on me.
I'm glad Goldilocks is gone. She was one sick bitch. ;P
I'm not sure how I feel about Bluebeard being gone though. I think he could've made a seriously good villian for future storylines. I keep thinking because of the abrupt way he was killed off that he will somehow come back, even though I know it's not possible.
I love the humor that is thrown in, even the potty humor with the flying monkey "I hardly ever throw my poop anymore". Hahaha, cute.
The ending was the best part for me. Just when Snow decides that she wants to take things slow with Bigby and give him a chance, BAM, she's pregnant. Didn't see that one coming. I can't wait to read the next issues!

The next chat will be on this coming Wednesday, June 7.  We'll meet at 8:30 pm EST.  We'll discuss Fables 18 to 27.

And a reminder:  Do order/request copies of "The Bloody Chamber" and "Fitcher's Brides" through a bookstore or a library as soon as you can or you won't get them in time.  And comment and let me know when you've gotten a copy.

4:29 pm - Next Chat and books to get.

prozacpark
For the next chat, we'll be reading Fables 18 through 27.  We'll also be reading the Fables Annual called "The Last Castle," which takes place after Fables 18.  So that's 11 issues, and we'll be having a chat on these in a little over a week.  Either on a Wednesday or Sunday.

For the novel, we'll be reading "Fitcher's Brides."  The chat for that will be at the end of June, but do try to get a copy of it soonish.  Also?  Drop me a line when you have gotten one.

Besides that, I want you to also get a copy of Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber."  It's a collection of short fairy tale retellings.  Try to get this sooner because I would like to have a chat on some of these short stories in mid-June.  You can vote on which ones.  I haven't read any of these, but I have heard nice things about Angela Carter, so I'm hoping that these will be good.

So, here is what you should be getting:

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter for a mid-June chat
Fitcher's Brides (Fairy Tales) -- by Gregory Frost for the end of June chat.

Please, order/request your copies through a bookstore or a library as soon as you can.  Bookfinder.com is really good for finding used/new copies of a book.  Let me know if you have any questions or any problems finding these.

5:21 am - IMPORTANT: about the chat tonight (May 25th)

prozacpark
For the chat tonight, could you guys check here before signing on to AIM?  We have two members who are kind of hanging between Thursday and Friday, so the chat tonight might get moved to Friday.  If that happens, I'll e-mail you if I have your e-mail address.  Either way, there will be an update here.  Check around 9:00-9:15 pm EST.  I'm really sorry about this, but if we don't do this chat in these two days, we won't be able to do it for another week or so because of some members going out of town.

So:  check back here before signing in to chat.  Thank you. :)

3:29 am - Next chat: Fables 11 to 17.

prozacpark
For our next chat, we'll continue to read the Fables comics. We'll be covering issues 11 to 17. So that will be the third graphic of the series, along with two issues from the fourth graphic. If you didn't join us for our last chat, be sure to read the first ten issues before you read these. We'll meet for this chat this coming Wednesday if no one has a schedule conflict with that day. Let me know if you have any issues finding the graphics. I may also pick a non-fiction essay for us to read along with Fables if I can find a suitable one online.

In addition to that, we'll also be reading a novel. The chat for the novel will not be until a month from now. I'll be posting details for a couple of novels in the next day or so, and we'll pick one of those to read.

1:31 am - Fables chat tonight moved to tomorrow.

prozacpark
So it seems like a few of us will not be able to make it to the chat tonight, so I'm moving it to Wednesday of this week, which will be May 17th. Let me know if that works for you. Especially if it doesn't. :)

This gives everyone an extra day. Have everything read by then. We'll meet at 9:30 EST on AIM/AOL. Just sign on to your messenger around then, and I'll invite you into a chat room.

For discussion, think about the differences between the characterization of protagonists in Fables and compare them to how they're traditionally represented in the stories we read and in popular conceptions.

1:16 am - Fables Chat: new chat date - May 16th, Tuesday.

prozacpark
It completely slipped my mind that Sunday was Mother's day when I scheduled the Fables chat. So we'll move the chat to Tuesday, which will give you two extra days. It'll be May 16th. Let me know if that works for everyone. The time is still 9:30 pm.

Links to the fairy tales and information on Fables can be found in previous posts.

7:34 pm - Fables: Chat Schedule and fairy tales selection

prozacpark
Our Fables chat is scheduled for a week from today: May 14, which is a Sunday. We'll meet at 9:30 pm. If the time/date doesn't work for you, suggest a new one.

We'll be using AIM/AOL for it. If I don't have your screen name for that, please leave a comment with it so I can invite you to the chat.

Information on our reading selection can be found in an earlier post here. Along with the first two graphic novels of Fables, we will also be reading Grimm's versions of the fairy tales featuring the main characters of Fables. Here's a list of the stories we'll be reading with links to annotated versions of them online:

Snow White and the Seven Drawfs
Snow White and Rose Red
The Three Little Pigs
Goldilocks and the Three Bears

These are all really short and readable. The Fables reading will take no more than two hours, and these short stories will take about another hour to read. So while it seems like a lot, it's really not. :) Alternatively, I have some of these stories as MP3 files on audio. If anyone prefers those, I can upload them. :)

For our next chat, we're going to be reading Vertigo's "Fables."  It's a series of comics or graphic novels (depending on the format you choose) that follows popular fairy tale characters living in exile in modern day New York City.

For the first chat on these, we'll be reading Volume 1: Legends in Exile and Vol. 2: Animal Farm.  Along with these, we'll also be reading original Grimm tales featuring the main characters from Fables.  I'll be linking to these online soon.

For now, try the first two volumes of "Fables" through a bookstore or a library.

Amazon has the graphic novels:

6:27 am - Friday: reminder for the chat tonight

prozacpark
First "10th Kingdom" chat is tonight at 8 pm EST. Just sign on to AIM/AOL around that time, and I will invite you into the chat when I see you on. This only works if I have your screen name. :)

We'll cover the first 3.5 hours of the movie, about 50 minutes into the second DVD or right after the Sheep contest.

If you have discussion questions, feel free to post them here. Or just think about the things you would like to discuss.
