1:07 pm - Introduction

Ooh, I haven't done one of these in a while! I guess the best place to start is the fact that I love everything fairy tale - art work, re-writes, films, moden interpretations.. Everything. I love discovering the meaning behind them, discovering how a reader might react to certain fairy tales and why. Also, comparing the original tale to the new (often disney-fied) version is a bit of a hobby, it fascinates me that what started as a rape by a king in one version of Sleeping Beauty became a kiss by an eligible prince in another. Finally, I like the myths of the original faeries and their modern rewrites ("Tithe" by Holly Black is the first to spring to mind).

My favourites are:

Beauty and the Beast: Every single version out there. The original stories, Angela Carter (whom I adore), Disney... all of it.

Snow White: From the morbid original to the morbid movie "Snow White - a Tale of Terror," to "White as Snow" by Tannith Lee. I don't like the Disney version, though; it's a bit vapid for my tastes.

Well, that's me! I look forward to discussions and new reading material. See you all in the community ♥

4:00 pm - Reminder: Silver Metal Lover chat tonight.

I've been spacing out lately and should've put up a reminder earlier, but the chat is still on for tonight.  I also realize that I didn't give a time for the chat in the earlier post, but it will be at our regular time:  7:30 CEN/8:30 EST.  We'll be discussing "Silver Metal Lover" and will figure out other chat times/schedules during the chat.   Let me know if something comes up that will keep you from the chat.  :)

2:19 pm - Ending the hiatus with updates.

I've been meaning to do this for a bit, but then I got sick with the flu and that was two weeks of my life that I'll never get back. :) We've been kind of dead for a while, and it's probably past time we get back to these chats. We're overdue for the "Silver Metal Lover" chat, and I think that some of us wanted to read the new Fables graphic novel, so we're going to do that soon, too. The graphic novel should be a good jumping in point for the new members, too. Which brings me to:

New members: I've been approving new members lately since we lost a few over the hiatus, I think. If you're new, please take a moment to post to the community and introduce yourself. Tell us a bit about you and your interest in fairy tales so we can get to know you. This is the only way for me to know that you're planning to be an active member of the community, and that way, I'll know not to take you off when we get of rid of lurkers.

As for future chats, I'm thinking that Wednesday might be too soon for one, so we'll start from this coming Sunday. Can everyone look over "Silver Metal Lover" by then? If so, we'll set 03/10 as the date for that chat, which is this coming Sunday. And then we can do the Fables graphic the following Wednesday, which will give new members a chance to get a copy. If you can't locate a copy, leave a comment and we'll figure something out for you.

Here's an amazon link for Fables Graphic Novel: Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall.

Let me know if you have any questions or if you won't be able to make the chat. :)

3:05 pm - Next Chat: "Arabian Nights."

I've made a list of movies that we'll be watching over the next two months (and we can vote on those when time comes), but I want us to do "Arabian Nights" first. There's a Fables graphic novel coming out next week that's based on the "Tale of a Thousand Nights and One Night." So I'm hoping that we can get "Arabian Nights" watched for a chat next week. That way, we'll be able to discuss the Fables story in context of the myth it's based on.

Here's the listing for "Arabian Nights" on amazon.com. Get yourself a copy in time for a chat on next Friday, Oct. 20th. It should be avaliable at local rental places.

Also, order a copy of Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall. We'll be having a chat on that at the end of October. It comes out next week, but you can pre-order it online.

Let me know if the chat date doesn't work for you or if you have any problems finding the movie.

10:30 pm - Chat Schedule and a change of pace.

I have been meaning to schedule a chat for "Silver Metal Lover" for a while, but I have not been able to read the book. When I picked this book, I had forgotten about classes starting and now that they have, things have been incredibly hectic for me. I have to read an insane amount of really long novels for classes this semester, and it doesn't seem like I would be able to make time for this book until December.

If you guys can wait till December for this chat, it'd be great. However, I know that some of you have already read this book, and I would hate to keep you guys from discussing it now. So if you want, you're welcome to go on and have this book chat without me. Whatever you decide, please do comment and let me know if you can wait or would rather have the chat some time this month. :)

Also, because classes are in session for some of us (and a special kind of hell for me this semester), I thought that we might try lighter stuff for the next few months. Which would mean that we would mostly do comics and movies, if everyone is okay with that. So when you comment to let me know your preference for the chat date for "Silver Metal Lover," post some suggestions for movies that we could watch.

dawn1025 Hi, I'm a new member to the group. Sheila recommended this group to me. I love to read. I have a lot of time on my hands, since I am an at home mom. Joining a book club seemed like a good way to do something I love and meeting new people. I look foward to my f

12:33 am - Next Chat. :)

I'm going to schedule a Fables chat for this coming Wednesday. We'll be reading the next four issues of Fables, from 28 to 31. That's only four issues, but let me know if Wednesday will be too early.

After that, I want us to read "Silver Metal Lover" by Tanith Lee. That chat for that will be in the first week of September, so please, get your copy as soon as you can.

We'll then read a few "Beauty and the Beast" short retellings and follow that with another novel. Get a copy of "Red as Blood" by Tanith Lee. Get copies of that and the "Silver Metal Lover" soon. :)

5:50 pm - New Theme: Beauty and the Beast

We'll be moving on from our Bluebeard theme and on to "Beauty and the Beast." For this, I want us to get these books:

  • Red as Blood: Tales from the Sisters Grimmer by Tanith Lee

  • Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee

The first book is a collection of short retellings. We'll be reading the "Beauty and the Beast" retellings from that and from "The Bloody Chamber" for our first Beauty and the Beast chat. "Silver Metal Lover," which is a sci-fi revision of the traditional Beauty/Beast stories, by Tanith Lee will be our longer selection for the Beauty and the Beast topic.

I would like to schedule the chat for short retellings of the story for the end of this month, so get these books as soon as you can. New and used copies of Silver Metal Lover are easily avaliable. Red as Blood is an out-of-stock book, but used copies are easily avablible. You can find copies at the following sites:

And there's always your local library. Let me know if you have trouble locating any of these books. And give me recs for more Beauty and the Beast retellings that you're aware of. :)

10:28 pm - Bluebeard chat moved to Sunday. :)

Just a note to say that we will not be having our Bluebeard chat tomorrow. We'll meet for the chat at the end of this week on Sunday, June 17th. That will give you guys a bit more time to read. We're reading "The Bloody Chamber" and "Tiger's Bride" from the Bloody Chamber collection. An online essay and the story of Cupid and Psyche. Link to both of these can be found in earlier posts to the community.

The chat will be at 8:30 pm EST. :)

9:11 pm - Bluebeard chat moved up a day.

Just a note to let you guys know that the chat has been moved up a day. So we'll meet on June 14th, Wednesday. This is assuming that everyone gets the book by then and is able to read it. But we'll still try for this Wednesday, and move it later if need be. :)

Other chat details are here.

8:40 pm - Next Chat: Bluebeard variations

Our next chat will be on Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber." We'll be reading two stories in the book: The Bloody Chamber and The Tiger's Bride. Besides these stories, I would also like us to read a short, nonfiction essay on the story of Bluebeard and different versions of it. The essay can be found online here: Bluebeard and the Bloody Chamber.

In addition to that, I would like us to read Cupid and Psyche by Lucius Apuleius. This ancient Roman story is very possibly the first of the stories where a curious heroine marries a supposed monster and disobeys his one demand.

For those unfamiliar with the Bluebeard story, the original fairy tale can be found here.

ETA: We'll meet for this chat on Wednesday (June 14th) at 8:30 pm EST.
